You may assume that a sleep apnea diagnosis means having to wear a bulky CPAP machine while you sleep. While this can be effective for some patients, it isn’t the only way to treat sleep apnea. North Virginia Sleep Solutions is proud to offer mask-free treatments to reduce or eliminate sleep apnea episodes, such as NightLase dental lasers and oral appliance therapy.
What is CPAP?
To appreciate a dentist treating your sleep apnea, it is important to fully understand the most popular solution for obstructive sleep apnea – the CPAP machine. CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. This bedside machine sends air to your nose through a hose and face mask that keeps your airway open while you sleep. While CPAP remains the gold standard in treating sleep apnea, not every patient is willing or able to tolerate this bulky sleep mask.
Common Problems with CPAP
CPAPs work well for those who can tolerate them. However, for some patients, they cause more sleep disruptions and discomfort. Here are some of the most common issues that patients experience with CPAP:
- Ill-Fitting/Leaking: When a CPAP mask doesn’t fit well, it can cause a host of problems. It may leak air and dry out the eyes. The air can also be quite noisy when it escapes from the mask and hose. If the straps are too tight, patients may suffer from tension headaches or indentations on their face when they wake up.
- Too Bulky/Cumbersome: The CPAP is not a discreet contraption. It can be especially burdensome and bulky to travel with. It is also nearly impossible to talk to someone once it is on, and it requires routine cleaning of its parts.
Whether it is physical discomfort, embarrassment or the general inconvenience, CPAPs are not for everyone. Fortunately, a sleep apnea dentist can often offer a better, more comfortable solution.
